Solskjaer believes United need to trim the squad as well as bringing in new, quality additions, and has identified the players that should be let go.
£75million striker Romelu Lukaku is the highest profile of the four players to be nearing an Old Trafford exit, but the Belgian saw opportunities limited under Solskjaer and has been linked with Inter Milan.
Juan Mata is said to be earmarked for a free transfer out of United after failing to agree a new contract extension, while Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo are also said to be surplus to requirements and would facilitate the signing of a new high-profile defensive signing.
The exit of the four players would free up room for 'four or five' new players, with Harry Maguire, Kalidou Koulibaly, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Daniel James and Nicolas Pepe mentioned as targets.
Meanwhile, The Times report that Lukaku's potential transfer to Inter solely hinges on the appointment of former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.
Inter are expected to appoint Conte, and the report states that once he is officially unveiled as the new coach he will make a move for Lukaku.
Report in Gazzetta dello Sport says Inter are planning to offer United 30 million Euro plus Ivan Perisic in exchange for Lukaku.
