Roger Federer survives scare to beat Gael Monfils in epic Madrid Open clash

Roger Federer  beat Gael Monfils and progress to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open.

The Swiss legend found himself a break down in the final set and saved two match points before ultimately winning 6-0 4-6 7-6 (7-3). Federer, 37, will now play Belgium’s Dominic Thiem as he bids to reach the semi-finals in Madrid.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion will hope a productive run in Madrid will provide the ideal preparation ahead of the French Open, which starts at the end of the month.

Speaking after the win, Federer said: ‘Gael stayed calm after losing the first set 6-0. He did a nice job at not being frustrating after that. ‘I tried to keep it going in the second set but it was difficult and I had a tough run for a while there.

‘It wasn’t looking good for a while but I hung in there. It was highly stressful but I played a good tie-breaker and I’m delighted I was able to win the match.’
