Newcastle United response to Manchester United over interest in Sean Longstaff

Solskjaer is in search of young homegrown players this summer with Jadon Sancho, Declan Rice, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Ryan Sessegnon all featuring prominently on his transfer wishlist.

Longstaff is one of the players on United’s radar having enjoyed an impressive breakthrough campaign at St James’ Park. The 21-year-old has been compared in style to former United player and current coach, Michael Carrick.

Reports has it that United have already held initial discussions with Longstaff ahead of a potential deal, however, the Chronicle states that sources close to Newcastle have insisted that Longstaff will not be for sale.

Longstaff has three years remaining on a contract he signed with Newcastle last year and the club are keen to tie him down to a longer-term deal on improved wages in order to keep him out of United’s clutches.

United are not the only club tracking Longstaff with Manchester City and Liverpool both dispatching scouts to watch him in action in recent months. England manager Gareth Southgate has also been monitoring his progress.

After breaking into the Newcastle side in December, Longstaff went on to make 12 appearances for Rafa Benitez’s side in all competitions, scoring twice before his season was ended by a knee injury in March.

It promises to be a busy summer at Old Trafford with a host of players likely to be moved on. Solskjaer will be seeking to bolster his midfield options with Ander Herrera already confirmed to be leaving and Juan Mata tipped to follow.
