JAY-Z & Timbaland Face $2 Million Lawsuit Over Sample used in 1998 track

Jay-Z and Timbaland are being sued by soul musician Ernie Hines for allegedly sampling his music without permission.Imagine being sued for a song you made over 20 years ago. That’s the reality for Jay-Z and Timbaland.

The Blast details Hov and Timbo received a new copyright infringement lawsuit over the 1998 single “Paper Chase.” The suit states the single contains the soul singer’s “Help Me” from 1969 within the instrumental. Hines co-wrote and composed the song and cites that he was unaware of the song due to his age.

The attorney for Hines stated he is a “senior citizen, does not listen to rap music and was unaware.”

The sample was also used in Ginuwine’s “Toe 2 Toe,” which is also listed in the suit for selling over 2 million copies.

The lawsuit is for $2,000,000 as he cites he was never paid for his work.
