Theresa May to beg EU for Brexit extension after 'blazing cabinet row'

PRIME Minister Theresa May will ask EU bosses to agree to a Brexit extension following a "blazing cabinet row", according to reports.

Government sources reportedly told Sky News the under-fire Tory leader will ask for a "short extension".

A new date of June 30 for Brexit day has been reported as a goal.

Sky's political correspondent Tamara Cohen said: "I have spoken to a senior government source who tells me Theresa May won't be asking for a long extension and that it will be a short extension that she asks the EU for in her letter today.

"I haven't been told exactly how long, but we expect it will be until 30 June which is the last date we could leave before having to take part in European elections.

"This follows a blazing row at the cabinet yesterday with some minsters saying it must be short - so there is the possibility of us leaving without a deal at the end of June.

"And others saying it must be longer, perhaps a year or more, in order to send a message to the hard Brexiteers in the Tory party - 'look you should vote for the deal, otherwise the alternative is staying in the EU for a very long period'.

"So it looks like those backing the short extension have won the argument.

"I think there was a real prospect of cabinet resignations if Theresa May played it long, but it is all in the hands of the EU.

"We have heard endlessly over the last few months... that they want a reason for an extension, evidence of some kind of change of approach, a second referendum or a general election.

"It is not at all clear what Theresa May will give as that reason and how it will be viewed in Brussels."

Theresa May is fighting for her political life after losing key votes to get her Brexit deal through Commons.

Earlier this month, she lost a vote to get MPs to back her controversial deal.

It came just weeks after she lost her bid to get a deal through in the biggest Commons defeat in history.

Britain is staring at the precarious prospect of leaving the EU with no deal, if MPs cannot agree on how to divorce the union.
